We started breeding Suffolks in 1970 and became established with the best Australian bloodlines. Since then, New Zealand and US genetics have been introduced. In 2001, 2 rams and 4 ewes were selected from the dispersal of Tasmanian stud “Cote Hele”. This bloodline really clicked with our Suffolks, setting us up for the success we have now achieved. In 2011 we used “Cote Hele Gemini” by A.I. with great success – this was the only sire line from “Cote Hele” not introduced from the dispersal sale.
Commercially, many of our rams go into marginal country where constitution and frame size are paramount and so we breed to suit this market. Our clients demand big framed rams which will sire fast growing lambs with good body weight – after all, weight is the still the greatest single determiner of lamb value.
We have always used the showring as our shop window and have received many awards over the life of the stud as testament to our success.
Perhaps our greatest success to date was winning both Interbreed Champion Ram and Ewe at Royal Melbourne in 2010 – a feat never achieved, before or since, by any other stud of any breed.
We believe strongly in linebreeding for consistency and reliability and so use predominantly homebred sires with great success. We regularly trial our best ram lambs in our mating program.
All sires DNA tested negative for Spider Syndrome.
